Background
The World’s Largest Food Company Chooses MDW® as Its Cultural Architecture
With 276,000 employees, CHF 107.6 billion in annual sales, 480 factories, and 10 million consumer service interactions annually across 86 countries, Nestlé is a system of extraordinary complexity. Aligning that system — harmonising compliance, sustainability, performance, and societal impact across every geography and every product category — requires not just a management model but a cultural one.
José Lopez, as the champion of Nestlé’s global transformation, identified MDW® as the Goal Alignment mechanism at the centre of a three-pillar integrated framework: the cultural glue that connected a global operating system to the daily behaviour of every person in it.
José Lopez, as the champion of Nestlé’s global transformation, identified MDW® as the Goal Alignment mechanism at the centre of a three-pillar integrated framework: the cultural glue that connected a global operating system to the daily behaviour of every person in it.
The Challenge
Delivering Societal and Business Value Simultaneously at Global Scale
The scale and complexity of Nestlé’s operations required a unified model that could harmonise compliance and performance globally, engage every employee in value creation from factory floor to executive suite, enable measurable reductions in waste and resource use, and deliver tangible societal impact across diverse geographies. The challenge was alignment: ensuring that what 276,000 people did every day added up to a coherent expression of the organisation's purpose.
The Approach — José Lopez’s Three-Pillar Framework
Goal Alignment as the Connective Tissue of a Global System
1
NIMS — Standardising Compliance GloballyThe Nestlé Integrated Management System standardised compliance across quality, safety, and environment globally — the non-negotiable baseline on which performance improvement could be built. NIMS ensured every factory operated to the same foundational standard regardless of geography, enabling TPMN and VSO to drive improvement from a consistent platform.
2
TPMN — Embedding Continuous Improvement DailyTotal Performance Management embedded continuous improvement into every team's daily work at all organisational levels. TPMN provided the structured performance discipline; MDW provided the cultural framework that gave it meaning. Together they connected daily team performance to Nestlé’s global Shared Value commitments in a way that neither system could achieve alone.
3
VSO — Efficiency from Supplier to ConsumerValue Stream Optimisation drove efficiency from raw material suppliers through manufacturing and distribution to the consumer. VSO made the improvement agenda commercial: reductions in water, energy, and GHG were not just environmental commitments but operational achievements produced by teams who understood their position in the value chain.
4
Goal Alignment — Every Employee Understanding Their RoleMDW® Goal Alignment ensured that every employee understood their role in delivering company goals, that teams developed shared accountability and pride in performance, and that leadership development was grounded in involvement and results. Across 86 countries and 480 factories, goal alignment through MDW® translated Nestlé’s Shared Value vision from strategic intent into daily operational reality.
5
MDW® as Cultural Glue — Not a Standalone InitiativeJosé Lopez’s most important positioning: MDW® is not a standalone initiative. It is the cultural glue that holds a global transformation together. NIMS provides compliance. TPMN provides the improvement engine. VSO provides the commercial logic. MDW® provides the human connection between all three — shared purpose, daily accountability, and the leadership behaviour that ensures 276,000 people understand what they are doing and why it matters.
Three-Pillar Integration
NIMS — Nestlé Integrated Management System: standardise compliance across quality, safety, and environment globally.
TPMN — Total Performance Management: embed continuous improvement into every team’s daily work at all levels.
VSO — Value Stream Optimisation: drive efficiency from suppliers through to consumers across the global value chain.
MDW® — at the Centre: Goal Alignment connects all three pillars to the daily behaviour of every employee across 86 countries.

Key Insight
Nestlé Global is the largest MDW® deployment in the CDI library. If MDW® can align 276,000 people across 480 factories in 86 countries — producing a 34% water reduction, 65,000 people trained, and 1.6 billion more nutritious servings — it can align any organisation behind any purpose worth pursuing.
